Planning Your First Months in a New Technical Role
By STEADYWRK Team
Start a new role by understanding what good work looks like in that role. Ask for the priorities, the tools you are expected to use and the person who can clarify an unfamiliar task.
Establish a learning record
Keep notes on the concepts you are learning and the questions you need to resolve. Separate an instruction you have confirmed from an assumption you still need to check. Do not put private workplace material into a public portfolio.
Choose a bounded contribution
Agree on a task with a clear result and an achievable review point. Show an early version before spending too long polishing the wrong interpretation. Record the feedback and the change you made in response.
Review progress with evidence
Bring examples to a feedback conversation: a corrected document, a test you added or a clearer explanation. Ask which skill should receive your attention next.
Review the plan with the person responsible for your work. Adjust its priorities to the role's written expectations and the feedback you receive.
